Does Schema Markup Help You Show Up in AI Answers?

Not directly. Google says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the most careful test so far, by Ahrefs in 2026, found that adding schema produced no major lift in AI citations. Schema still earns its place: it states your facts in a form machines can read, keeps pages eligible for rich results, and helps Bing ground its answers, as long as it matches the page.
What does Google say about schema and AI features?
That you do not need it for them. Google's page on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org structured data to add. Its May 2026 guide to generative AI features goes further and lists "overfocusing on structured data" as a myth, while recommending you keep using it for rich result eligibility. One of Google's listed best practices for AI features is the useful part: make sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page.
Does adding schema increase AI citations?
The evidence says no, or not much. Ahrefs, an SEO software company, tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026 and compared each with matched pages that did not. Citations moved by 2.2% in ChatGPT and 2.4% in Google's AI Mode, both statistically indistinguishable from zero, and fell in AI Overviews. Ahrefs notes limits: the pages were already well cited, schema types were pooled, and the window was 30 days.
An observational report from AirOps, another vendor, found pages with JSON-LD were cited somewhat more often, 38.5% against 32.0%. Its own conclusion is that such signals are "table stakes for AI visibility, not differentiators." Sites that bother with schema tend to do many other things well, which is why correlation is not proof.
So why bother with schema?
Because machines still read it, and it costs little when it is generated correctly:
- Google uses it to understand pages. Its introduction to structured data says Google uses it to understand page content and to gather information about the world. Organization markup helps Google disambiguate your business, and LocalBusiness markup tells it your hours and departments.
- Bing uses it for grounding. Bing's Webmaster Guidelines say structured data may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility.
- Rich results still exist for some features, such as products, reviews, events, and breadcrumbs.
Which rich results are left?
Fewer than most guides assume. Google limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in August 2023, deprecated HowTo results the next month, and stopped showing FAQ rich results entirely on May 7, 2026. In June 2025 it phased out seven more, including course info, claim review, and vehicle listings. If an agency promises FAQ snippets in Google today, that offer is out of date.
What happens if schema doesn't match the page?
It becomes a risk instead of an asset. Google's structured data guidelines say not to mark up content readers cannot see, and a structured data issue can lead to a manual action that removes the page's rich result eligibility. Bing says misleading markup may be ignored and can affect trust. The safest pattern is to generate schema from the same data that renders the page, so the two cannot drift apart.
Can AI assistants even see your schema?
Not if it depends on JavaScript. A Vercel and MERJ analysis found that none of the major AI crawlers it studied, including OpenAI's and Anthropic's, render JavaScript, so markup injected by a script after the page loads may never be seen. Google can read injected JSON-LD, but other systems may not. OpenAI's own guidance for ChatGPT search says nothing about schema; it asks sites to let its crawler in. The practical rule: put the markup in the server-rendered HTML, and put every important fact in the visible text as well.
What schema should a business have?
A short list, done accurately:
| Page | Markup | What it states |
|---|---|---|
| Home page | Organization | Name, logo, contact details, official profiles |
| Location pages | LocalBusiness or a subtype | Address, phone, hours for that location |
| Articles | Article with a named author | Who wrote it and when |
| Every inner page | BreadcrumbList | Where the page sits on the site |
| Products or services | Product or Service, where it fits | What you offer, as the page describes it |
This site generates its markup from the same data that renders each page, and client sites follow the same standard: Ask Health's patient site ships structured data and passes 451 automated checks before every release. For how markup fits a full program, see what an AI SEO service should include, why a business doesn't show up in ChatGPT, and, for businesses with many locations, whether city pages still work. Frequently asked questions
Is schema markup a ranking factor?
Not in the way it is often sold. Google describes structured data as a way to understand pages and enable rich results, and says a structured data manual action removes rich result eligibility without affecting how the page ranks. Treat schema as clarity, not a ranking boost.
Should we still add FAQ schema?
Only where the page shows a real FAQ, and not for a Google snippet: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. Bing says structured content such as FAQs helps its AI systems interpret pages, so matching FAQ markup does no harm.
Does ChatGPT read schema markup?
OpenAI's documentation does not mention schema markup. To be eligible for ChatGPT search, it asks sites to allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler. Because major AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, keep important facts in the page's visible HTML.
Can bad schema hurt us?
Yes. Google can apply a manual action for structured data that misrepresents the page, which removes rich result eligibility, and Bing says misleading markup may be ignored and can affect trust. Mark up only what readers can see.
