How Do You Know If ChatGPT Is Sending You Customers?

By Oscar Ortega, Founder3 min read
Combine four signals. Check the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4, which groups visits from ChatGPT and other assistants. Check AI impressions in Search Console. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, every month, and note whether you appear. And ask new customers how they found you, because many people read the answer and then call or search for you directly.

Combine four signals, because no single one tells the whole story. Check the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4, which groups visits from ChatGPT and other assistants. Check AI impressions in Search Console. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, every month, and note whether you appear. And ask new customers how they found you, because many people read an AI answer and then call or search for you directly.

Can you see ChatGPT traffic in your analytics?

Often, yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends people to from ChatGPT search (OpenAI's publisher FAQ), so those visits arrive labeled. Other assistants usually show up as referrals from their own sites, such as perplexity.ai or gemini.google.com, although most vendors do not document exactly what they send.

For scale, one vendor study of about 100,000 websites using Google Analytics found that AI platforms sent 0.32% of all their traffic in early 2026, against 42.75% from organic search, and that ChatGPT sent about three quarters of the AI share (SE Ranking, June 2026). Small, but growing.

The catch is that clicks are only part of it. Many people read the answer and never click. They call the number in the answer, search your name, or type your address, and those visits look like direct traffic or branded search.

How do you see AI traffic in Google Analytics 4?

You may not need to set anything up. Since May 2026, GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel: when a visit's referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or Claude, it is grouped there, with the medium set to ai-assistant (Google Analytics Help). Look for it in the Traffic acquisition report. Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode are not in this channel; they stay in Organic Search.

If you want your own definition, GA4 also supports custom channel groups, and Google's help article includes an AI assistants example to place above the Referral channel. If you copy its pattern, tighten it first: a rule that matches any source containing "ai" also catches unrelated sources, such as mail.google.com.

What about Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode?

They count in Search Console, but mostly blended in. Google reports clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the normal Performance report, under the Web search type (Google Search Central).

Since June 2026, Search Console also has a separate generative AI performance report that shows impressions from AI features by page, country, and device, though not clicks (Google's announcement). Google says it reached all websites on August 31, 2026, so check whether yours has it. Bing Webmaster Tools added a similar AI Performance report in February 2026, which counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.

How do you check whether AI assistants recommend you?

Ask them, the same way, every month:

  1. Write 10 to 20 questions your customers actually ask, in their words: the service plus your city, the problem plus "near me", your business name.
  2. Ask each assistant you care about: ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot.
  3. Record three things: whether you are mentioned, whether your site is cited, and which page.
  4. Repeat monthly with the same questions, so changes mean something.

If you never appear, the problem is usually the foundation, covered in why a business does not show up in ChatGPT. For medical practices specifically, see how patients find doctors through ChatGPT.

Why should you still ask customers how they found you?

Because it catches what analytics cannot. Add "an AI assistant, like ChatGPT" as an option on your intake form or booking flow, and have the front desk ask on the first call. One clinic's founder learned that new patients were finding the practice through ChatGPT exactly this way: by hearing it from them, as described in the BioCure Health case study.

What should you report each month?

Five numbers on one page: AI Assistant channel sessions in GA4, leads or bookings from those sessions, AI impressions in Search Console, mentions from your prompt checks, and self-reported "found us through AI" answers. Together they show whether AI visibility is turning into customers. It is the same discipline as judging ads on cost per qualified lead, the way Radius TeleMed ran its funnel. Measuring it is part of how Cream Digital runs lead generation operations.

Frequently asked questions

Why does AI traffic look so small in analytics?

Because many people never click. They read the answer, then call you, search your name, or type your address directly, and those visits show up as direct or branded search instead of AI. That is why asking new customers how they found you matters.

Does Google tell you how much traffic comes from AI Overviews?

Partly. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report under Web search, and since June 2026 a separate generative AI report shows impressions from AI features by page, but not clicks.

How often should I check whether AI assistants mention my business?

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Use the same set of questions each time so the results are comparable, and note which pages the assistant cites.
