Should Your Business Answer Customers on WhatsApp With AI?

If your customers already message you on WhatsApp, yes. An AI agent can answer them in their language at any hour, look up an order or a booking, and hand off to a person when the conversation needs one. It has to work inside WhatsApp's rules: reply freely for 24 hours after a customer writes, use approved templates after that, message only people who opted in, and always offer a clear way to reach help.
Who actually uses WhatsApp?
More of your customers than you might think, especially in South Florida. In Pew Research Center's 2025 survey, 32% of U.S. adults said they use WhatsApp, and 56% of Hispanic adults did. For businesses that serve Latin American customers, it is often the first place people write.
That was the situation at Aereomar Express, which ships packages and freight from Miami to Nicaragua and beyond: most of its customers write in Spanish on WhatsApp, and the team was answering the same questions all day.
What can an AI agent do on WhatsApp?
Aereomar's agent, Sofia, shows the scope:
- Answers in Spanish, day and night, as a paid monthly service since early 2025.
- Checks live package status from the company's tracking platform, so customers get an answer in the chat without waiting for staff.
- Explains rates, rules, and locations: restricted items, office hours, addresses, and the cubic-foot pricing formula.
- Grows with the company. Its knowledge base was updated as Aereomar opened in Spain in 2025 and added warehouses in Panama and Colombia in 2026.
- Leaves a record. The team can review every conversation in a dashboard.
The same kind of agent works for appointment booking, quotes, follow-up, and tenant messages for property managers. Cream Digital's Lead Supplai runs AI follow-up across voice, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram Messenger, and email.
What are WhatsApp's rules for businesses?
Four matter most:
- The 24-hour window. When a customer messages or calls you, a customer service window opens for 24 hours and resets with each new message. Inside it you can reply normally; after it closes, you can only send pre-approved templates.
- Opt-in. You may message only people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from your business, and you must honor any request to stop, on or off WhatsApp (WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy).
- A way to reach help. You may automate replies inside the window, but the policy requires a prompt, clear escalation path, such as a handoff to a person in the chat, a phone number, or an email.
- AI for your customers, not as the product. Since January 15, 2026, the WhatsApp Business Platform terms bar companies whose main product is a general-purpose AI assistant, but a business can use AI to serve its own customers.
What does WhatsApp cost a business in 2026?
Meta charges per message, under pricing that began July 1, 2025 (WhatsApp pricing):
- Templates are charged by category: marketing, utility, and authentication.
- Replies inside the 24-hour window were free until October 1, 2026. Since then, each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, and messages after that are charged.
- Conversations that start from a click-to-WhatsApp ad get a free window.
Rates vary by country, so check current prices for the countries your customers are in.
How do you set it up without losing the human touch?
Five steps:
- Write the knowledge base from the questions your team answers every day.
- Connect the systems the answers live in, such as tracking, scheduling, or your CRM.
- Answer in the customer's language, as covered in handling Spanish-speaking callers.
- Design the handoff so a person picks up with the conversation attached, using the method in human-in-the-loop handoffs.
- Review conversations weekly and add what the agent could not answer.

Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp allow AI chatbots?
For your own customers, yes. Since January 15, 2026, WhatsApp's terms bar companies whose main product is a general-purpose AI assistant from the platform, but businesses can use AI to answer their own customers.
Do I have to tell customers they are talking to AI?
WhatsApp's business policy does not require an AI disclosure, but it does require a prompt, clear way to reach help when you automate replies. Saying it is an AI assistant up front is still good practice, and some state laws may require it.
Can I send promotions on WhatsApp?
Only with opt-in and an approved marketing template when you are outside the 24-hour window, and those messages are charged. Check current rules for messages to U.S. numbers before planning a campaign.
